Orton-Gillingham is a reading program that utilizes a multi-sensory approach to enhance reading and writing development. OG is a great fit for all learners ages 4+, including those with dyslexia. OG targets the following aspects of reading:
Individual reading sessions start with an initial evaluation of phonological awareness, letter/sound awareness, segmenting, blending and fluency. Individual sessions are 1-2x/week, 45 minutes/session. Reading sessions take place online or in-person at the Mount Pleasant (off Mathis Ferry) and downtown Charleston (off Calhoun) libraries.
Initial Evaluation: $90
Treatment Sessions: $90
As a speech therapist, Ms. Kerry has seen the impact sensory regulation and movement has on engagement and learning. During private tutoring sessions, she observed many of her students seeking the same sensory integration and urge for movement, so she created Movement and Nature-Based Outdoor Reading Groups! These groups are great for students who have an ADD/ADHD, sensory processing disorder, or just love to move!
We have three groups targeting different areas of the literacy hierarchy: Letter Learners, Story Tellers and Book Buddies. Groups take place in Hampton Park in downtown Charleston.
Letter Learners might complete a nature hunt for items starting with different sounds and use them to make a word.
Story Tellers might read a recipe, retell the sequence to their peer and then make a treat.
Book Buddies might read a chapter from a group book and complete a compare/contrast chart while doing an obstacle course.
The "Letter Learners" group is a great fit for students new to reading (4+) or those having difficulty blending sounds to form words. In this group we target:
The "Story Tellers" group is consistent with the Grade 1-2 curriculum and uses functional activities (e.g, reading/making recipes or scavenger hunts) and movement to make reading fun. We target:
The "Book Buddies" group is consistent with the Grade 3-5 curriculum. Think, book club for kids! The goal for this group is to create a positive connection with reading while targeting "reading to learn" concepts including:
